Biographical Statement

Scope and Contents

The collection includes 21 manuscript notebooks containing Yiddish language translations of plays, mostly from 1920-1940, written out by Harold Sternberg and Fraydele Oysher, as well as typescripts. They re-wrote these plays to be able to take them on the road with smaller companies than the original scripts called for; also includes about 220 pieces of sheet music (1890's-1930's) in Yiddish and English, many with pictorial covers showing the stars who sang them on stages and in theatres in New York, Boston, Chicago, published in New York, Moscow, Vienna, Constantinople, St. Petersburg; 200 pages of a musical manuscript, scored for many instruments; 8 manuscript items by Harold Sternberg and others, 8 ephemera items, inscribed to Fraydele Oysher or with her notes written on them; newspaper clippings in Yiddish, programs and two photographs of Fraydele Oysher.
