Elroy McKendree Avery (1844-1935) was a politician, author, and historian. He served in Ohio senate in the 1890s before moving to Florida. He wrote textbooks on chemistry and physics and history texts on the city of Cleveland, Ohio where he served as a city councilman, and New Port Richey, Florida where he served as mayor.
The Elroy McKendree Avery Papers, 1871-1893, consist of correspondence and contracts relating to the printing and sale of the book by Avery entitled Cleveland in a Nutshell (1893), notebooks related to schoolteaching, and notes on genealogy of the Avery family used by Avery and his wife Catherine Hitchcock (Tilden) Avery (1844-1911) in compiling The Groton Avery Clan (1912).
