The Bateman Family of Springboro, Ohio, began about 1814 when Jacob and John Bateman, two brothers, migrated to the area from Chester County, Pennsylvania. The Batemans were Quakers and were of Welsh descent. Jacob and John became pork packers and tanners in the Springboro area and lived there until their deaths, in 1862 and 1846, respectively. Edna (Bateman) Schmidt (1885-1971), a great-granddaughter of Jacob, began work on a genealogy of the Bateman family in 1903. The work was later expanded by her son, Robert E. Schmidt (born 1917) of Parma, Ohio, who added material on other families.
The Bateman Family Genealogical Papers 1903-1969, consist of notebooks, letters, clippings, and publications relating to the Bateman, Smith, Watt, Schmidt, Pearson, Thomas, Mendenhall, and Walker families, all ancestral families of Robert E. Schmidt. Some of the material is information he obtained from his own research and some is material obtained from other people.
The collection contains genealogical information on the families Schmidt researched and some biographical information on certain family members. Robert W. Smith, an ancestor of Schmidt, is featured in one brief biography.
