Biography of the Bateman Family

The Bateman Family of Springboro, Ohio, began about 1814 when Jacob and John Bateman, two brothers, migrated to the area from Chester County, Pennsylvania. The Batemans were Quakers and were of Welsh descent. Jacob and John became pork packers and tanners in the Springboro area and lived there until their deaths, in 1862 and 1846, respectively. Edna (Bateman) Schmidt (1885-1971), a great-granddaughter of Jacob, began work on a genealogy of the Bateman family in 1903. The work was later expanded by her son, Robert E. Schmidt (born 1917) of Parma, Ohio, who added material on other families.
