The Alexander B. McFarlan Papers, 1819-1866 and undated, consist of correspondence, diaries, legal papers, and notebooks relating to McFarlan's role in the construction of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.

The letters and papers of Alexander B. McFarlan relate mainly to the work done on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, for which McFarlan acted as Superintendent of Masonry and Inspector of Cement. A number of personal letters are also included.
