Henry Holcomb (1830-1919) was a furnace manufacturer in Painesville, Ohio, who served as a band musician in the 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, 23rd Army Corps during the American Civil War. The collection consists of autobiographical scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, letters, records, photographs, and Holcomb's comments and revisions. Topics include Holcomb's experiences as an army musician during the Civil War and the history of the First Congregational Church of Painesville. |

The Henry Holcomb Papers, 1864-1919, consist of autobiographical scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, letters, records, photographs, and Holcomb's comments and revisions. Topics include Holcomb's experiences as an army musician during the Civil War and the history of the First Congregational Church of Painesville.
The scrapbooks, compiled ca. 1895-1919 after Holcomb retired as a manufacturer of furnaces, address subjects such as the First Church (Congregational) of Painesville, Ohio, from 1810-1910; events relating to Holcomb's personal and family history, 1830-1864; and his experiences as a band musician in the 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, 23rd Army Corp, 1864-1865, compiled from a series of pocket diaries and letters written by Holcomb during the American Civil War. Other scrapbooks related to financial, economic, and political matters, such as the currency question and trusts, 1896-1912; the campaign and election of 1896; state, national and municipal reform, ca. 1900-1910; and Painesville city politics, 1900s.
