Abstract: |
The Friends missionary work in China began in 1887 with the arrival in Nanking of Esther Butler. She worked in the Philander
Smith Hospital, learning the language and customs of the people, until 1890, at which time land was secured and a missionary
home was built. The compound was closed and evacuated several times during its early years due to civil and political unrest,
including the Nanking Incident of 1927, and the missionaries there endured great danger and hardship. Plans to form a mission
center in Taiwan (Formosa) began in 1951 and the Formosa mission was established in 1952. The collection contains 3.52 cubic
feet of reports, correspondence, histories, pamphlets, maps, and other papers concerning the EFC-ER missions to Nanking and
Taiwan (Formosa), as well as a Japanese Gospel of John, Chinese vocabulary texts and resources, and a Quaker History manuscript,
dating between 1892 and 1989.
