Abstract: |
A feature of the Cleveland Arts environment since 1980, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony was founded by Edwin London and has
received numerous awards, including American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) Awards in 1990, 1991, 1993,
1994, 1996-1997, 1997-1998, 1999-2000 and 2000-2001. The collection consists of 61 boxes of materials, of which the majority
are scores. Other materials include audio recordings (reel-to-reel tapes and cassettes), concert programs, office files, and
award plaques.

History of Cleveland Chamber Symphony
The Cleveland Chamber Symphony has been bringing new commissions of classical music as well as neglected, older works to
audiences since 1980. Founded by composer Edwin London, former music faculty at Cleveland State University, the group began
as an orchestra-in-residence program at Cleveland State University and in 2004 moved to Baldwin-Wallace College College
Conservatory of Music, where it is now directed by Steven Smith. The unique mission of the Cleveland Chamber Symphony is to
"commission, perform, record and promote the dissemination of musical works exclusively by composers of our time."
Scope and Content
The majority of the collection consists of musical scores, some of which were written by composer Edwin London. The Cleveland
Chamber Symphony collection (1978-2004) consists of 61 boxes of materials. Besides scores, the collection has correspondence
from Cleveland composers and Cleveland State University faculty, such as Andrew Rindfleisch, Bain Murray, Dennis Eberhard,
P.Q. Phan, Howie Smith, and Rudolph Bulabo, correspondence between Abingdon and Copland (1987-2000), ASCAP Award notes,
season programs, award plaques, posters, and audio recordings. A rudimentary inventory of the collection has been created
and is available upon request.
Statement of Arrangement
The collection is in original order but some some of the collection has been redistributed according to size and format. A
rudimentary inventory is available upon request.

in 2004.

The collection received preliminary processing at the time of acquisition and portions of the collection received additional
processing in 2009. Further organization, rehousing, and description was carried out in 2012.
