History of Ursuline College Breen School
The Catholic Diocese of Cleveland closed St. John College in 1975, and its Center for Nursing, accredited since 1951, was
transferred to Ursuline College. During the 1986-87 academic year, the name of the academic unit was changed to the Division
of Nursing with a chairperson as leader of the program. At the beginning of the 1998-99 academic year, Ursuline College changed
the name of the program to the Breen School of Nursing in honor of donors John and Mary Jane Breen. The Breen School of Nursing
has a history of a strong baccalaureate degree nursing program and in 1998 added a master's degree program. The Breen School
of Nursing is fully approved and accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and the Ohio Board of Nursing.
