History of the Dean of Students

The positions Dean of Men and Dean of Women existed prior to the creation of Dean of Students. In 1962, the Dean of Students title was created as an overseer of the two positions. The positions of Dean of Men and Dean of Women existed until 1966. These offices were responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing a variety of programs and services which are designed to assist and support students, including giving approval for the creation and continuance of student organizations. Historically, they were also overseers of student behavior.

The Dean of Students (DS) records span from 1930 to 1995 and contain records created by the DS, Dean of Men and Dean of Women offices of Ohio University. The collection is organized into three series: 1. Dean of Men; 2. Dean of Students; and 3. Dean of Women.

1. Dean of Men, 1937-1966, 1988-1995

Scope and Content
Series 1. Dean of Men spars from 1937 to 1995 and contains records generated by the office of the Dean of Men and Ohio University. Records include annual reports, correspondence, brochures, applications from student organizations and committee reports. Deans represented in this collection include Maurel Hunkins, William Butler, Thomas Dutton and Jerrold Griffis. The collection also has the records of the Assistant Dean of Men for Fraternity Affairs.


This series remains in its original arrangement.


2. Dean of Students, 1962-1970s

Scope and Content
Series 2. Dean of Students contains records generated by the office of the Dean of Students at Ohio University. Subseries A. Dean's Office includes correspondence, brochures, applications from student organizations and committee reports. Deans represented in this collection include William Butler, Joel Rudy and Carol Harter. Subseries B. Director of Student Services contains records from this office located within the Dean of Students purview. Records include correspondence, memoranda, reports, and meeting minutes. Directors represented include Charles Harrington. Subseries C. Student Personnel Program contains bound volumes on the status of this program which seems to be a multi-department effort fro the supervision of students. The volumes contain reports from the Dean of Students, Dean of Men, Dean of Women, student activities offices at the branch campuses, the student health center, security office, housing department, Baker Center, international students advisor and the placement and internship office.


Organized into two subseries: A. Dean's Office; B. Director of Student Services; and C. Student Personnel Program.

Series 3. Dean of Women spans from 1930 to 1966 and contains records generated by the office of the Dean of Women at Ohio University. Records include annual reports, correspondence, brochures, applications from student organizations and committee reports. Deans represented in this collection include Margaret Deppen. Assistant Deans represented include Erma Anderson.
