History of The Center for Islamic Studies

The Center for Islamic Studies was established as a result of an endowment agreement between YSU President Leslie H. Cochran and Dr. Nazir Ahmed, the president of the "Community for the YSU Chair of Islamic Studies." Leslie Cochran said, "This gift will help the University advance its goal to produce graduates who are global citizens-who understand and value the diverse religious and cultural tradition in America and the world ." The Center for Islamic Studies is located in the Philosophy and Religious Studies department in Debartolo Hall. The center seeks to promote the academic study of Islam by publishing periodicals (such as the Iqbal Quarterly and Studies in Contemporary Islam), inviting scholars to give talks and holding seminars . The Center for Islamic Studies is directed by Dr. Mustansir Mir. There is also a website at http://www.as.ysu.edu/%7Eislamst/.The website provides information on Iqbal Quarterly and Studies in Contemporary Islam as well as the center's activities, the Advisory committee (composed of 3 YSU faculty members and 3 members of the Youngstown Muslim community), links to other related websites, and information on the Pluralism Project of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.

Scope and Content

The records were deposited by James Sacco, Dr. Mir's assistant in the Center for Islamic Studies, to the Archives and Special Collection. The materials cover the years 1999-2006, and are arranged by type of publication in chronological order. The records contain one series, Publications; within this series contains three different types of publications, a pamphlet from a lecture sponsored by the Center for Islamic Studies, the Iqbal Quarterly, and Studies in Contemporary Islam. The pamphlet was created by Frederick M. Denny, a professor of Islamic studies and history of religions at the University of Colorado, who's lecture was title "The Spiritual-Intellectual Hospitality of Islam and Muslims: Reflections of a Christian Scholar" when he came to YSU in March 2005 as a guest speaker for the Center of Islamic Studies. The Iqbal Quarterly (formerly the Iqbal-Namah) is published quarterly and is co published by the Iqbal Academy Pakistan. The bulletin "aims to introduce the works of the South Asian poet-thinker Muhammad Iqbal (1877-1938) to general readers in the English-speaking world and contains brief extracts from Iqbal's writings, short studies on his works, notices of critical and interpretive works about him, and other pertinent information in the field of Iqbal studies . This collection contains the years 2001-2006. The final publication, Studies in Contemporary Islam, is published by the center, semiannually in the spring and fall (collection contains years 1999-2003). The journal is coedited by Professors Mumtaz Ahmad of Hampton University and Mustansir Mir of Youngstown State University. The mission statement of the publication "is devoted to the understanding, review, analysis, and critique of contemporary Islamic religious, intellectual, and philosophical developments as well as of sociopolitical changes in Islamic societies ."Unfortunately, according to James Sacco, the publication was suspended in 2007.
