History of 455th Bombardment Squadron Association

The 455th Bombardment Squadron was a B-26 Marauder squadron commissioned during World War II. Part of the 323rd Bomb Group, the 455th Bomb Squadron was formed on September 11, 1942 at MacDill Field in Tampa, Florida. The group moved to Hernham, England from May to June 1943. Combat operations began in July. As the German Army was forced back, the group base moved further and further inland-Earls Colne and Beaulieu in England; Lessay, Chartres, Laon, and Valenciennes in France. Squadron Commanders of the 455th included Bill Brier, Grover Willcox, and A. J. Satterwhite. The squadron was officially disbanded in September 1945, three years after its creation. The 455th Bomb Squadron Association was first conceived by Harry O. Hills as a simple reunion for members of the 455th. Robert Long, a former squadron member, passed away and his wife gave his memorabilia to Hills. Hills partnered with Frank Brewer and organized the reunion in order to gather even more material about the squadron. The first reunion was scheduled in October 1982 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The night became a huge success and turned into a yearly activity for the newly formed 455th Bomb Squadron Association. Apart from yearly meetings, the 455th Bomb Squadron Association appointed Ralph Wefel group historian in order to create a complete squadron history. He was succeeded by Paul Mulrenin who finished the project. Mulrenin also worked with Missing Air Crew Reports in order to identify the countless unnamed soldiers in the photos collected for the history project. Following Hurricane Hugo, the 455th Bomb Squadron Association donated dues to Myrtle Beach (1989) to aid in recovery. The group's last official meeting was in October 2011.

Scope and Content

The records of the 455th Bombardment Squadron Association include the records of the association and collected material. The association newsletters are helpful in documenting the growth and activities of the association. The newsletters range in date from 1983 through 2011, with gaps from 1986 through1988 and 1991 through 1994. They include administrative documents and reports to the membership, association activities and personal accounts from squadron veterans. Much of the Correspondence series relates to tracking down members of the squadron, writing the unit history and identifying photographs for that history. The Photograph series includes many, but not all, of the images of identified individuals and places. The photographs used in the making of the 455th's Marauder Squadron Albums reside in the Printed Material series as part of the printing master for those volumes. This three volume set reviews the history of the 455th during World War II, provides information about many members since the war and includes some photographs and comment about some of the reunions. The Marauder Memoirs is an anecdotal history of the 455th veterans' experiences. The Collected Materials series includes items from members of the squadron such as diaries, flight logs, orders and scrapbooks.

Statement of Arrangement

These records have been divided into six series. Series I: Association Newsletters (1983-2011) This series consists of the newsletters of the 455th Bombardment Squadron Association starting with the second newsletter in 1983 and extending to 2011. Series II: Correspondence (1983-1996) This series includes correspondence between members of the association who were identifying and trading photographs of individuals, places and aircraft as they began to write the unit history and search for former members of the squadron. Series III: Photographs (1942-1988) This series consists of photographs donated by members of the 455th Bomb Squadron Association. The photographs depict individuals, aircrews, aircraft and their stations during World War II. The series also includes photographs of members at several early reunions and memorial events. Series IV: Printed Material (1943-1997) This series is composed of two sub-series: Material by 455th Bomb Squadron Association and Other Material. The material by the 455th Bomb Squadron includes drafts of the unit history and personal anecdotes from veterans that were published by the association. Also included in this sub-series is a booklet on nose art of the 455th Bomb Squadron aircraft. The Other Material sub-series includes printed material such as unit histories, collected journals, magazine articles, and a special edition of the book Strikes: 323rd Bomb Group (M) made specifically for the 455th Bomb Group Association. Series V: Subject Files (1942-1998) This series consists of files on various subjects that the 455th Bomb Squadron Association addressed or inquired about. It includes various association activities such as researching their unit history, making rosters of personnel, and planning reunions, meetings and other gatherings.
