History of Akron and Summit County Federation of Women’s Clubs

The Akron and Summit County Federation of Women's Clubs was organized in 1893. It united with the Ohio State Federation of Women's Clubs in 1917. Both organizations were part of the national organization, the General Federation of Women's Clubs, with headquarters in Washington D.C. The philosophy behind the Akron and Summit County club is best summed up by Article II of its Constitution: "The aim of the Federation is to bring the various organizations of Summit County into closer relation through an organic union. . . . The object of the Federation is to serve as a medium of communication and a means of furthering any work of common interest." Dues paying membership in the club was open to both individuals and organizations, with members electing the club's officers. The organization was divided into Departments of Work and each department into committees. In 1926, for example, these departments included American Citizenship, Applied Education, Public Welfare, and Fine Arts. By 1985, the number of departments had increased to include International Affairs, Legislation, Home Life and Conservation.

Like other women's organizations, the Akron and Summit County Federation of Women's Clubs raised money for charity, invited guest speakers to give lectures, awarded scholarships, and worked on various community-related projects such as tree planting. However, along with the state and national organizations, the Akron and Summit County club also lobbied for political reform including the first federal child labor laws, the Pure Food and Drug Act, the establishment of children and women's bureaus, meat and poultry inspection, better schools and libraries, laws dealing with factory inspection, and sanitary laws, among others.

Statement of Arrangement

The records consist of the following six series: Series I: Presidents' Notebooks date from 1954-1970 and are a record of the activities of the club under each president. For each year they include such materials as minutes, financial reports, budgets, names of the officers and board of trustees, correspondence to and from the president, state and national convention programs, and newsletters. The early volumes in the Series (1954-1960) consist mainly of financial reports and copies of the club's newsletter. The notebooks give the fullest account of the day-to-day running of the club. Series II: Directories cover the years 1917-1957 and 1977-1986. They include the names and addresses of officers, club members, names of affiliated clubs and information about activities Series III: Scrapbooks cover, chronologically, the longest period (1917-1976) in the club's records with only a ten year gap (1946-1956). They mainly consist of newspaper clippings about members of the club as well as social events relating to the Akron and Summit County Club, the Ohio Federation of Women's Clubs, and the General Federation of Women's Clubs. Series IV: Newsletters mostly consist of the Federation Newsletter dating from 1953-1964 (Vols. 1-12) and from 1968 to 1980 (Vols. 17, 24, 26-18; Volumes 24 and 27 are incomplete). The newsletter reported the club's past and future events. There are some pamphlets, broadsides and correspondence bound in with the newsletters. There is also a folder of two editor's reports relating to the publication of the newsletter. Series V: Subject Files includes certificates and awards made to the club, thank you notes, clippings, a resolution, notes from three of the clubs committees, membership certificates, solicitations for donations, a budget for 1978-1979, and a guide to the Western Reserve, and banquet, convention and conference programs. Series VI: History consists of a four volume history of the Ohio Federation of Women's Clubs from 1894 to 1994.
