The Private Industry Council of Akron was formed in 1978 as an outgrowth of President Jimmy Carter's Private Sector Initiative Program. The Private Industry Council (P.I.C.) was made up of a chairman and approximately 20 members of the business community and local government. Their purpose was to join with local government in designing and implementing skills training and hiring programs for the disadvantaged and unemployed. The P.I.C. was also interested in bringing new businesses to Akron; this was demonstrated by a national advertising campaign in 1980 which brought inquiries from 38 states and 11 foreign countries about relocating to Akron. The P.I.C. is an independent organization not officially affiliated with the city of Akron.
The records contain materials concerning media and public relations, conferences, seminars, P.I.C. programs, business surveys, and legislation. The media and public relations materials consist mainly of business correspondence, newspaper and magazine articles, photographs and advertisements for the 1980 national advertising campaign, a slide show, and press conference information. The conferences and seminars attended consist of business correspondence, expense sheets, conference itineraries, conference programs, and newspaper articles.
The P.I.C. programs files deal mainly with the development and implementation of P.I.C. and include business correspondence, pamphlets, articles, and reports. The survey material is composed of correspondence about choosing an agency to conduct the survey and the types of questions to ask. There also are booklets, pamphlets, and a copy of the survey.
The legislative files consist of correspondence, articles, and copies of legislation related to job training. There also is a copy of Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) Title VII, which established the guidelines for the Private Industry Council. The records are organized alphabetically by folder title and then chronologically.
