History of Biography or History
The National Aeronautic Association of the United States (NAA) is a non-profit organization. Members of the Automobile Club
of America founded the group in 1905 as the Aero Club of America (ACA). From its inception, ACA's goal was to promote aviation
in any way possible, as both a sport and commercial endeavor. During its founding year the ACA joined numerous European nations
to create the international aviation organization Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) with the goal of fostering
aeronautical activities worldwide. In 1922, the NAA was incorporated as the ACA's successor and continued the original group's
mission to promote aviation. The NAA is the oldest national aviation club in the United States and one of the oldest in the
world. It has been steeply involved with the growth of aviation in the United States almost since its beginning, to the point
of being the sole issuer of pilot licenses in America until the Civil Aeronautics Act of 1926.
Today, the NAA is "dedicated to the advancement of the art, sport and science of aviation in the United States." The scope
of NAA encompasses all areas of flight, from skydiving and models to commercial airlines and military fighters. Headquartered
at the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington, D.C., the NAA has three distinct responsibilities: the recording
and certification of aviation and aerospace records, the administration of aviation trophies and awards, and working with
air sports organizations in America on the advancement of their individual sports. The NAA has certified aviation and aerospace
records in the United States since 1905 including those of every type of lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air craft imaginable.
The NAA acknowledges the accomplishments and achievements in aviation and aerospace through its trophies and awards, some
of which are considered the most important awards of this nature in the world, including the Robert J. Collier Trophy for
"the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America." Within the United States and its Territories, the NAA
has the sole responsibility of administering awards established by the FAI, including the Gold Air Medal and Gold Space Medal.
The NAA is led by a thirty-plus-member board of directors with representatives from major aeronautics companies and organizations
throughout the country and has five groups of members: Corporate, Air Sport, Affiliate, Aero Clubs, and Individuals. Its
corporate members include Boeing, GE, Gulfstream, and Lockheed Martin, to name a few, and its individual membership totals
over 1,000 people.
The Akron Women's Chapter of the NAA was founded in 1924 at the request of the officers of the Men's Chapter to the Educational
Department of the Akron and Summit County Federation of Women's Clubs. The aim was to educate and excite the people of Akron,
Ohio on aviation. It was arranged by Rose V. (Brewter) Burch, Mrs. Frank Meese, Katherine McLain Knight, wife of Akron newspaper
publisher John S. Knight, and Maude (Waters) Milar. The first president was Gertrude (Grant) Stadelman, wife of Goodyear
Tire & Rubber Company president George Stadleman. At the death of Stadleman in 1928 the group went dormant for a few years,
during which the city's interest in aeronautics grew, as well as the aeronautic industry. The Akron Women's Chapter of the
National Aeronautic Association experienced a resurgence in 1930, led by Milar, at the request of city officials and civic
organizations.
The goal of the Akron Women's Chapter was to bring the NAA into a closer relationship with the people of Akron, to honor those
contributing to the advancement of aviation or space flight, and to stimulate interest in and disseminate information about
aeronautics and space. The chapter focused on educating the city's youth and perpetuating a scholarship. The chapter hosted
many activities and events to promote aeronautics in the Akron community including garden parties, christening aircrafts,
balloon races, derby flights by women flyers, the Cleveland Air Races, model airplane building competitions, and various service
projects. Membership in the chapter was open to woman in the City of Akron and the vicinity who had an interest in promoting
aviation. The officers included the president, first vice president, second vice president, recording secretary, corresponding
secretary, treasurer, and assistant recording secretary-treasurer. The term for the officers was one year. The regular meeting
of the chapter was held on the third Monday of each month while the annual meeting was held on that day in November, during
which officer elections took place. The National Aeronautic Association
