Biography of Biography or History

Caroline Julia Pardee was born in 1911 to Judge William Eyles and Helen Amelia Pardee (maiden name Lanphere). Caroline resided in her family home near The University of Akron until her passing in 2003, and was an active member of the Akron area community as well as an avid traveler and writer. Caroline was christened in the Universalist Church of Akron (now the Unitarian Universalist Church of Akron) and attended Spicer Elementary School, Central High School (now Central-Hower High School), and graduated from the University of Akron in 1932. While attending the university, Caroline became involved in the Eta Chapter of the Delta Gamma Sorority- a group she would maintain active participation in as an alumni for the rest of her life. Caroline briefly took graduate coursework at Radcliffe College, but with hard times brought on by the depression she had to leave graduate school. She worked as a social worker in a relief office, then attended the Actual Business School and worked at the Audiphone Company. In the early 1950s Caroline was offered the job of secretary to the President of the University of Akron. The president was Dr. Norman Auburn at the time, and Caroline accepted. Caroline maintained a close friendship with the Auburn family, two generations beyond Norman Auburn.

Caroline authored Little Boy Who Found a Knife: The Story of Ernest Warther, Master Carver in 1952 as a history about the Warther Museum in Dover, Ohio. She also edited My Dear Carrie: The Civil War Letters of George K. Pardee and Family as a genealogical endeavor. She was a poet, writing poetry and participating in local literary and poetry contests. She was involved in the Women's City Club, the Akron Chapter of the American Heart Association, The University of Akron Alumni Association Board, The University of Akron's Founder's Club, The University of Akron Athletics Advancement Council, the Law Dean's Club, the Altrusa Club of Akron, the Council on World Affairs, and the Friends of the Akron-Summit Public Library. Caroline traveled to every continent at least twice, circled the globe four times, and traveled widely throughout the United States. She presented on these travels in the Stan Hywet travelogue series, to elementary school classes, as well as throughout the community. She was generous with her time in this way, but was also generous with her money as she donated to The University of Akron frequently to support various programs, particularly the athletics programs.
