History of St. Bonaventure Church and San Antonio de Padova Church, Fairmount

St. Bonaventure Biography St. Bonaventure Church was founded in 1844 as St. Peter Church on Lick Run. In 1868 or 1869 it moved to Queen City Avenue and rededicated to St. Bonaventure, sometimes called St. Bonaventura. From this time until 1996, it was ministered by Franciscan Friars and largely attended first by German immigrants and then later by Italian immigrants as well. Due to a priest shortage, it was merged with San Antonio in 1989. It was eventually united to St. Leo the Great Church in North Fairmount in 2003. The property was sold to the National Heritage Academy. The church was torn down, but the school buildings remain. San Antonio di Padova, for the Italian Congregation Biography San Antonio di Padova Church was founded in South Fairmount for the Italian population through the purchase of a building already in existence at 1946 Queen City Avenue. The first mass was offered on August 6, 1922 and the formal dedication took place on October 8th. A new church building, built specifically for San Antonio, was dedicated on December 1, 1940. The church underwent many renovations over the years and was ministered by Franciscan Friars from 1928 to 1989. On March 31, 1989, San Antonio became a chapel and was put under the administration of St. Bonaventure Church.

Scope and Content

The records in this record group belong predominately to St. Bonaventure Church. A small subgroup belongs to the records of San Antonio di Padova Church. It was merged with St. Bonaventure in 1989, and so its records are included here. This includes bulletins and subject files. Records span late 19th century to the early 21st century. Records include financial reports and ledgers, bulletins, correspondence from the Department of Agriculture, Parent Teacher Association meeting minutes, and subject files of various church events.
