History of Our Mother of Good Counsel Church, Felicity

Our Mother of Good Counsel was founded in 1945 after Archbishop John T. McNicholas called for mission parishes to be established in rural areas. Rev. Joseph J. Schneider was pastor at St. Mary Church in Bethel and approached residents of Felicity about establishing a parish in that town. Received with enthusiasm, furniture and sacred items were donated from nearby churches. The church was completed in November 1948. Never a large parish, shifting demographics brought a decline in parishioners to Our Mother of Good Counsel. St. Mary Church in Bethel and St. Peter Church in New Richmond absorbed the parishioners from Our Mother of Good Counsel. The church officially closed on July 1, 1997.

Scope and Content

The bulk of the records include the parish bulletins from 1963 to 1997 and parish financial records. Four oral histories were conducted in 1977 and have been transcribed for the “Parish History” file. Several sacred items have been preserved in this record group. Photographs generally come from the 1970s-1980s time period.
