History of Holy Angels Church, O'Bryonville

The parish of Holy Angels was established on April 16, 1859, as a spiritual haven for the 40 Catholic families who lived in the vicinity of East Fulton. According to the files of the Catholic Telegraph, a church was needed for the English speaking residents of the area. In February of that year a site for the new church was located on Torrence Road near Columbia Avenue, donated for that purpose by William C. Peters. An old wood shack served as a temporary structure while the building was in progress. Archbishop Purcell blessed the cornerstone on the original church on May 1, 1861. In 1920, a new church was built nearby. The old church was sold and eventually torn down in 1938. Holy Angels' school was begun in 1860 and was staffed by lay teachers for many years until the Sisters of Notre Dame took charge. The school was closed in 1965 due to declining enrollment. In 1999, Holy Angels parish merged with St. Francis de Sales.
