Biography of Biography or History

In 1909, the Starling-Ohio Medical College in Columbus, Ohio, was the first school to use the word ‘psychiatry’ to describe a department of study. Starling-Ohio Medical College became The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1914. In 1946 the College of Medicine created the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry. The two specialties remained in the same department until 1951. The new Department of Psychiatry utilized the Columbus Receiving Hospital, completed in 1951, for treating patients. This facility underwent several name changes until 1963 when it was christened Upham Hall in memory of Dean John H. J. Upham. Another development in the 1960s was the formation of the Division of Child Psychiatry. In 2014 the Department of Psychiatry changed its name to the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health to recognize the interdisciplinary nature of treating mental health problems.
