McCartyville is an unincorporated community located in Shelby County, Ohio. It is the county seat of Shelby County. It was founded in the mid-19th century by settlers who were "heavily Catholic". (https://www.revolvy.com/) In 1933, the Trustees of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish contacted Mother Mary Regina and requested teachers. These Sisters were to be paid via a unique payment system. Three Sisters of Charity---Sister Aloysia Moorman, Principal; Sister Rose Stanislaus Becker; and Sister Rose Gertrude Vorspohl---taught at this school under this special financial arrangement. Their salaries were paid by the county and then the Sisters "donated" part of their salary back to the school each year. The Motherhouse agreed to the conditions but withdrew the Sisters after only one year (1934-1935) because of the primitive and austere living conditions. The Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and Parish (https://sacredheartohio.org) continues today.
This collection consists of one file containing in part, correspondence, financial information, a brief historical summary, a copy of a lease and contract between the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati and the Sacred Heart Church McCartyville, Ohio.
