History of Mother Margaret Hall
On March 20, 1947, Mother Mary Zoe Farrell and the General Council announced that the Congregation would build a 6-story,
133-bed facility for the sick, old, and retired Sisters. Ground was broken just north of the original Infirmary (later St.
Mary Hall) on May 12, 1947, and the dedication took place April 9, 1949. Patients were moved in the following month. Not
all of the floors were used at first, but in the 1960's when the Mount was overcrowded, at least one floor was used for either
the Novices or the Junior Sisters. From then on, the facility was generally filled.
A major remodeling was done in 1991 when the West Wing was converted into 43 assisted Living units, support areas, and another
elevator. The East Wing accommodated 82 licensed nursing home units.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of 4 boxes and 38 file folders (one oversized) containing, in part, historical reports, publications,
correspondence, and news clippings. Also included is a thesis entitled Symbolism in the Windows of Holy Spirit Chapel that
was written by Sister Francis Regis Lambert. This, along with some of her corresponding research notes shed light on the significant
design elements in the Chapel.
Statement of Arrangement
The arrangement adheres to the original order whenever possible.
Restrictions on Access and Use
Permission to use the collection can be obtained from the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati Congregational Archivist. External
researchers need to complete a request form stating the purpose of their research and a list of collections to be consulted
upon their visit, which must be approved by the Archivist prior to an on-site visit. If a researcher is unable to visit the
Archives in person, the Archivist will conduct a minimum amount of research and provide scanned copies of some materials if
requested.
