Biographical/Historical Notes

Grace Elizabeth "Beth" Hertz (1920- ) was born and raised in rural Iowa. She qualified as a home economics teacher at Iowa State University, and would teach at an Iowa high school from 1941-1942 before marrying her husband, Martin Raymond Hertz (1916-2011), an Army Air Corps aeronautical engineer, and moving to New York. Whilst studying at ISU, Hertz had taken an elective course with the resident sculptor, Christian Petersen. In New York, she decided to further her artistic ambitions by enrolling at the Art Students League of New York, a non-degree awarding school taught by professional artists. She attended from 1942-1943, studying with sculptors William Zorach and Ossip Zadkine, amongst other artists. Afterwards, Hertz maintained a relationship with William Zorach and his wife, Marguerite, as well as with their children Tessim and Dahlov, and would visit their summer home at Robinhood Farm in Georgetown, Maine.

In the late 1940s, Hertz, her husband, and two young children settled in Dayton, Ohio, where she was able to take advantage of Robert Koepnick's sculpture classes at the Dayton Art Institute. In 1968, Hertz embarked on a Masters of Fine Arts degree in painting and sculpture at Ohio University, writing her thesis on the Synchromist painters, notably Stanton MacDonald-Wright, who was a major influence on her artwork.

After her graduation, she taught art whilst also sculpting and painting independently. Her most typical painting medium is oil on canvas, focussing on "abstracted subject matter presented in infinite tones and hues, harmonies and contracts of color which carry the main thrust of mood and idea". Her sculpture varies both in media and style. She has exhibited across Ohio and beyond, and her paintings and sculptures can be found in collections across the country.

Biographical/Historical Notes At the Art Students League, Hertz studied with William Zorach. Hertz maintained a relationship with William and his wife, Marguerite, as well as with their children Tessim [married Peggy] and Dahlov [married Adolph Ipcar] . Following her time as Zorach's student, Hertz visited the family summer home at Robinhood Farm in Georgetown, Maine, where she assisted in daily chores while receiving critiques on her artwork. Into the 1950s, visits were more infrequent but Hertz still looked to Zorach for advice on her art career and frequently exchanged news about their families and careers. In 1951 Hertz facilitated William Zorach's guest lecture at the Dayton Art Institute Commencement Dinner. Box 2 / Folder 1

Stanton Macdonald-Wright - audio cassette recording of interview by Elizabeth Hertz, conducted Aug 1968 [5 audio tapes - digitized version available onsite], 1968

Quantity: 5 tape/s (audio)
Physical Description: The tape inside the audio cassette labelled Side 5 and Side 6 detached from its reel during digitization. The tape spool was removed, repaired, and placed into a new cassette body because the original could not be reused. The audio was not affected. A duplicate of the cassette labelled Side 7 exists, but it is faulty. The audio was digitized from the functioning version.

Scope and Content: The audio cassettes are labelled as follows: Side 1 - Aug 6, 1968 Side 2 - Aug 6-7, 1968 Side 3 - Aug 7-8, 1968 Side 4 - Aug 8-9, 1968 Side 5 - Aug 9, 1968 Side 6 - Aug 10, 1968 Side 7 - Aug 12, 1968 [there is a duplicate recording of Side 7 which is faulty] These audio cassettes seem to have been made by recording the audio from the original reel to reel recordings made by Hertz [see information on the sale of Hertz materials in Box 4]. This process has introduced some noise into the recordings, but they are generally audible and can be used in conjunction with the transcript. The tape inside the audio cassette labelled Side 5 and Side 6 detached from its reel during digitization. The tape spool was removed, repaired, and placed into a new cassette body because the original could not be reused. The audio was not affected. A duplicate of the cassette labelled Side 7 exists, but it is faulty. The audio was digitized from the functioning version.
